Last Friday night I attended the pre-party for BarCampCLT. If you are expecting me to explain what BarCamp is, you are out of luck. I was just in it for the drinking and mingling at HOM. Which closed the following Monday. Meh. That at least explains why they didn’t have anything in stock for mixed drinks.
I was looking forward to kinda/sorta meeting some of the people that I “know” from Twitter. I did and I learned a lot from the experience (even though I didn’t really attend any of the educational sessions the next day). I’ve compiled a list of my favorite moments below. Enjoy!
1. “I knew you were a girl.” – Brian Cary
this made me especially happy since the first time I met James Willamor he told me he thought I was a guy. True story.
2. “You girls can’t possibly be here for barcamp”…a few moments later….”i work in the adult industry.” – CJ
I don’t know if you all watch HIMYM (actually I don’t know why you wouldn’t) but in the show they sometimes talk about the telepathic conversations that friends have with each other. At the moment the words “adult industry” left his mouth, Gabby and I had our very first telepathic convo. It went something like this:
Gabby and Meck, in unison: LIFETIME MOVIE
3. Talking about the manhole cover conspiracy with David Kyle
Manhole regulations+habitat for humanity=evil. Ask him about it.
4. Me: My name is Meck
Girl: That’s cool, is that short for something?
Me: Ummm, no.
Girl: *blink blink*
Jason Keath: it’s not her real name.
4. “Wait, Meck isn’t your real name, is it?” – Marc
Honestly, I am not so sure anymore. How deep is this rabbit hole?
As always, CLTblog is on top of it with photos. Check em’ out.

Wow! Apparently someone didn’t clean the wax out of their ears that night.
The 2 are not directly related. To clarify, I was discussing the ineffectiveness of HFH and how it doesn’t even scratch the surface of the affordable housing problem in Charlotte.
The “manhole cover” regulation was just ONE EXAMPLE out of hundreds of outdated construction regulations that drive up the cost of housing.
There isn’t a conspiracy per se. Just a “good ol’ boy” system between CharMeck politicians and the construction industry. They are happy the way things are, and won’t change anything that would disturb existing business arrangements.
The politicians support moronic things like HFH because it gives them the opportunity to publicly pretend that they care about poor people.
This isn’t anything new. Anyone interested can read a detailed report on the subject here:
