The world is in the toilet, but my Tuesday night was de-wait for it-lightful! How I Met Your Mother Season 3 came out on DVD. I’ve been waiting to catch up since I was only introduced to the show by my friend, Nines, after my breakup in April. And for some reason, they couldn’t release it before Season 4 started two weeks ago. It’s ok though, because I had a fantastic night. I bought the DVD, diversified my beerfolio with a 6pack from Bloom (sam adam’s ale and boston lager, summer wheat, new castle, woodchuck, and a miller chill – a.maz.ing.). I also picked up a tasty dinner of pepperoni and french fries. Whatever, I do what I want. I got into my navy sweatpants, wore a random charity t-shirt (red cross) curled up on my couch and enjoyed!

I know that this may be a sin big enough to ruin my chances of ever joining the Charlotte elite, but in the name of truth, it must be said: Bloom is better than Harris Teeter. I know the Teeter, Tweeter, Harry Peter’s, Harry Teets, Taj Ma Teeter, or whatever you happen to call it, is the preferred shopping location of the Queen’s noble court, but I just can’t understand why when Bloom is practically perfect in every way. Yes, a variety of people shop at Bloom, which is probably why more Charlottans don’t. But the enticing floor layouts and added convenience of its catchy marketing ploys more than justify the slightly inflated prices. Whereas at the Teeter, you’ll pay the most for groceries with simply the added benefit of seeing “Harris Teeter” on your receipt. Many would argue they shop at the Teeter for organic, but come on, even WalMart markets that crap. Plus, if you are truly committed to shopping organic, you should be going to Trader Joes.

People are weird, especially in this city, about paying higher prices for things they can buy cheaper somewhere else. And I get there are certain things that would convince you to do that: convenience, how nice a store is, etc. But the thing is, for every perk the teeter has, bloom has five more – and they do it better and cheaper. Here are just a few things I love about Bloom:

The carts (or as my bughies like to call them, buggies)- A giant shopping cart is cumbersome, and, frankly, just looks foolish if you are a single person buying a weeks worth of groceries. And no one likes to use baskets because after two cans of soup and a jar of spaghetti sauce it is too heavy to hold. The carts at Bloom are perfection, just the right size for a person on short trip who is too lazy to hold a basket – how can the rich not love this? Plus they are easier to maneuver and damn cute too!

Better bakery – Bloom’s bakery just rips the Tweeter a new one. They have a better selection and the desserts are more delicious. Trophy wives who are too busy looking in the mirror to bake, that’s for you!

Speciality foods – more kinds of sauces, condiments, teas etc. Also, a real international food offering, not just Mexican or microwavable Asian. And more spices for people who are actually into cooking and trying new recipes…

But if you aren’t into cooking

The Already-Ready section – located at the front of the store, everything you need to pick up a prepared or almost prepared meal. If you are on your way home from work and need to grab something quick for dinner, everything you are looking for is in this convenient circle, including some wines. You don’t even need to walk down an aisle.

And speaking of…

The aisles – if you aren’t just grabbing something quick, you can easily find anything you are looking for because the food is grouped with what you eat it with. Pasta, sauce, and Parmesan cheese are all together, the way God intended.

And finally

Create your own 6-Pack – no elaboration necessary.

Bloom, the future of Charlotte food shopping.
